Orosomucoid in liver diseases

Abstract: In this editorial, the roles of orosomucoid (ORM) in the diagnoses and follow-up assessments of both nonneoplastic diseases and liver tumors are discussed with respect to the publication by Zhu et al presented in the previous issue of World Journal of Gastroenterology (2020; 26(8): 840-817). ORM, or alpha-1 acid glycoprotein (AGP), is an acute-phase protein that constitutes 1% to 3% of plasma proteins in humans and is mainly synthesized in the liver. ORM exists in … Show more

“…In a murine model of acute lung injury, Il1rn -/mice exhibit delayed resolution of inflammation and increased numbers of neutrophils in lung tissue 52 , and IL1 signaling has been implicated in neutrophil longevity in a preclinical model of Aspergillus fumigatus infection 53 . Aged neutrophils from RSVposP subjects demonstrated a unique transcriptional profile, enriched with protease inhibitors (i.e., SLPI, PI3, and CSTB), ORM1 (an acute phase reactant of uncertain immunoregulatory function 54 ), and TNFAIP2 (an inhibitor of TNF signaling 55 ). They additionally expressed fewer mitochondrial transcripts relative to RSVposL and RSVneg aged neutrophils, which suggests reduced cell death.…”

“…But notably, patients who accepted bariatric surgery or caloric restriction had lower Orm2 expression levels. Orm2 is generally considered an anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory factor owing to its anti-neutrophil and anti-complement activities 13,30 . We believe that the relatively (which was not certified by peer review) is the author/funder.…”

Orm2 is generally considered an anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory factor owing to its anti-neutrophil and anti-complement activities 13,30 . We believe that the relatively elevated Orm2 may be a reflection of the low-grade state of inflammation in NAFLD or obesity, while high Orm2 levels help activate immune cells to clear inflammation.…”

“…It has been speculated that AGP-1 plays an important role in cancer, but its exact biological function is still confusing. In multiple types of cancer (sarcomas, Hodgkin's disease, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), gastric adenocarcinoma, ovarian cancer (OC), peritoneal carcinomatosis, breast cancer (BC), glioblastoma multiform (GBM), lung cancer) AGP-1 level in plasma is enhanced [33][34][35].…”
