Organotin(IV) Carboxylates as Promising Potential Drug Candidates in the Field of Cancer Chemotherapy

Abstract: Medicinal inorganic chemistry plays an important role in exploring the properties of metal ions for the designing of new drugs. The field has been stimulated by the success of cis-platin, the world best selling anticancer drug and platinum complexes with reduced toxicity, oral activity and activity against resistant tumors are currently on clinical trial. The use of cis-platin is, however, severely limited by its toxic side-effects. This has stimulated chemists to employ different strategies in the development… Show more

“…The most common PVC stabilizers include Schiff bases [24][25][26][27][28], polybenzimidazoles [29], polyphosphates [30], pigments [31], zinc oxide [32], and titanium dioxide [33,34]. Tin complexes containing organic moieties have high stability and are used in many medicinal and industrial applications [35][36][37][38]. The efficiency of tin complexes is highly dependent on the organic moieties and substituents attached to the tin (Sn) atom [39].…”

“…Compounds containing tin have unique physical and chemical properties and are widely used in the pharmaceutical industry [31]. Organotin compounds containing carboxylate moiety showed potential for use as a cancer chemotherapy drug [32]. They can be used as antimicrobials [33], anti-inflammatory agents [34], antitubercular agents [35], biocides and wood preservatives [36], and catalysts [37].…”

“…Organotin (IV) compounds have been receiving increasing attention over the past years [1][2][3][4][5][6] due to their possible use as biologically active non-platinum chemotherapeutic agents, that might have lower toxicity, better excretion properties and fewer side effects than platinum based drugs [7][8][9]. These compounds, even at low doses, present high anti-proliferative activity which, in some cases, is higher than that of cisplatin.…”
