Organisational learning in SMEs: a process improvement perspective

Abstract: Purpose -We investigate how Organisational Learning (OL) can occur through Process Improvement (PI) activities and how this can lead to sustained improvement over time in the context of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).Design/methodology/approach -We study PI practices in six engineering-oriented SMEs via interview-based case studies. We draw from a range of literature and use an OL conceptual framework, informed by Crossan et al.'s (1999) 4I framework, as an analytical lens.Findings -The OL perspecti… Show more

“…Accordingly, the institutional theory has been used to examine different pressures firms face to adopt a technology (Teo, Wei & Benbasat, 2003;Yin, 2017). Additionally, scholarly evidence supports the argument that the degree of a firm's technological adoption is dependent on its internal factors such as competencies and learning capabilities (Murray & Donegan, 2003;Chiva, Alegre, & Lapiedra, 2007;Matthews, MacCarthy, & Braziotis, 2017). Therefore, in the subsequent sections, we shall elaborate on how the integration of the institutional theory and organizational learning theory can influence chatbots adoption among firms in the tourism and hospitality ecosystem…”

“…In SMEs in particular, lines of communication are short and learning is often more informal. This paper, therefore, argues in line with Matthews et al (2017) that a formalised system for managing knowledge is likely to be more important for larger organisations. This study's sample did not allow for comparison with large enterprises, leaving the question of the importance of a learning organisation for larger enterprises open for future research.…”

“…The next two highest-ranking constraint categories are "increasing use and effectiveness of information technology (IT) process automation" and "defining and standardising processes and practices", which are both related to the efficacious use of underlying infrastructure and logical operational thinking; together these constraints accounted for 13.3 per cent of all constraint category frequencies. This constraint category accords with Matthews et al (2017).…”
