Orbital calibration of the late Campanian carbon isotope event in the North Sea

Abstract: A new record of carbon isotopes, nannofossil biostratigraphy, gamma-ray and Fe content variations is presented for the upper Campanian of the Adda-3 core, Danish Central Graben, North Sea. The studied interval provides a revision of previously assigned late Coniacian to early Santonian ages. New biostratigraphic data indicate a late Campanian age for the 60 m thick studied interval. The Late Campanian Event (LCE) is well recorded by a 1.5‰ negative excursion in the bulk δ 13 C, along wi… Show more

“…Petrizzo [69] discussed unreliability of Globotruncana ventricosa for several reasons and introduced Contusotruncana plummerae as first appearance as zonal marker for tropical and subtropical regions instead of G. ventricosa to first occurrence of Radotruncana calcarata. Besides that, the exact position of G. ventricosa stratigraphically is imprecise [53,70], the Conica Event [29]. Farouk and Faris [59] recorded G. ventricosa over the Globotruncanita elevata in the shallow marine carbonate platform in the Mitla Pass, Northern Sinai.…”

“…Unfortunately, these attempts rarely cover the time interval in which the Ivö Klack sediments were deposited (latest Early Campanian; e.g. Wendler, 2013;Perdiou et al, 2016). Given the length of individual magnetochrons, carbon isotope shifts and biozones, the accuracy of dating obtained by strontium isotope dating cannot, at the moment, be matched by the abovementioned integrated stratigraphical approaches (Wagreich et al, 2012).…”

“…In the context of the Joint Chalk Research Consortium, nannofossil biostratigraphy has been published for a few wells in the Danish sector of the North Sea (Bailey et al 1999;adopted in Anderskouv & Surlyk 2012). More recently, an integrated biostratigraphic-cyclostratigraphic-isotope stratigraphic approach has been applied to scientific boreholes in the Danish Basin (Ineson et al 2006;Rasmussen & Surlyk 2012;Thibault et al 2012a, b;Surlyk et al 2013) and a well in the Danish Central Graben (Perdiou et al 2015).…”
