Optimum design of viscous dissipative links in wall-frame systems

Abstract: SUMMARYThis paper deals with the optimum design of fluid viscous dampers used as dissipative connections in wallframe structural systems. The analyzed structure is composed of two substructures, the frames and the wall, and it is subject to a seismic acceleration. The optimum design is based on a 'global protection strategy', which aims at protecting both the substructures, i.e. both the frame and the wall. In this context, the authors formulate a multi-objective optimum design, where there are two conflicting… Show more

“…With the purpose of maximizing TMD efficiency, over the years, numerous approaches have been proposed for the optimum design of TMD. After the work of Ormondroyd and Den Hartog (), several optimum design methods have been introduced in literature, aimed at minimizing the vibrations induced in mechanical and structural systems by various types of excitation sources (Crandall and Mark, ; Sadek et al ., ; Rana and Soong, ; Hoang and Warnitchai, ; Rundinger, ; Hoang et al ., ; Krenk and Høgsberg, ; Marano et al ., ; Marano and Greco, ; Greco and Marano, , ). In most of the above studies, the main structure is generally represented by an equivalent single degree of freedom system.…”

“…Seismic retrofit strategies of frame structures are quickly evolving, and several significant contributions have been recently offered in terms of design approaches and modelling (Marano et al, 2007;Greco and Marano, 2016;Di Trapani et al, 2020;Aloisio et al, 2022), as well as of implementation of innovative protection techniques or upgrade of existing ones (Aloisio et al, 2022;Boggian et al, 2022;Lu and Phillips, 2022;Zhao et al, 2022).…”

“…Jiang et al (2020) developed an optimal design method based on analytical formulae, derived by minimizing the height of the convective wave, mainly focusing on slender tanks. Zahedin et al ( 2020) faced a preliminary multi-objective optimization problem (Reggio et al 2020)- (Greco and Marano 2016) for an Inerter Base Isolation System (IBIS).…”
