Optimal control in epidemiology

Abstract: Mathematical modelling of infectious diseases has shown that combinations of isolation, quarantine, vaccine and treatment are often necessary in order to eliminate most infectious diseases. However, if they are not administered at the right time and in the right amount, the disease elimination will remain a difficult task. Optimal control theory has proven to be a successful tool in understanding ways to curtail the spread of infectious diseases by devising the optimal diseases intervention strategies. The met… Show more

“…Little is known about the best policy to employ scarce resources for disease control when epidemics occur in a specific region. In such context, optimal control is an usual tool to address this problem . In the dengue fever context, optimal control theory is also considered using different dengue models .…”

“…In such context, optimal control is an usual tool to address this problem. [3][4][5][6][7][8][9] In the dengue fever context, optimal control theory is also considered using different dengue models. 10,11 Broadly, different control strategies to reduce the spread of dengue disease are used, and the optimal control for nonlinear systems is an alternative.…”

“…Modelling tool plays a big role in epidemiology by providing a concrete mechanism for understanding spreads of the disease and suggesting effective control measures [8]. The intervention programmes are used in planning, implementing, evaluating, prevention, therapy and control measures [23]. The eradication of disease in the environment does not only depend on medical issues, but also on the ability of understanding the transmission dynamics of a particular disease and the application of the optimal control strategies and the implementation of logistic policies [8].…”
