Optimal binary phase codes and sidelobe-free decoding filters with application to incoherent scatter radar

Abstract: Abstract. This paper presents binary phase codes and corresponding decoding filters which are optimal in the sense that they produce no sidelobes and they maximise the signal-tonoise ratio (SNR henceforth). The search is made by investigating all possible binary phase codes with a given length. After selecting the code, the first step is to find a filter which produces no sidelobes. This is possible for all codes with no zeros in the frequency domain, and it turns out that most codes satisfy this requirement. … Show more

“…The present authors have carried out an exhaustive computer search of optimal binary phase code-mismatched filter pairs up to a code length of 25 and the advantages of eliminating the sidelobes in the analysis of an incoherent scatter measurement were demonstrated in practice by Lehtinen et al (2004) and the reference within. The present authors have also extended these kinds of investigations to aperiodic quadriphase codes Damtie et al (2008).…”

“…We have shown the R value defined in (Lehtinen et al, 2004) and (Damtie et al, 2002) to describe the close-to-perfectness of a code (or here a code set) on the panels of the second row for each lag profile. There we also print the minimum and maximum values of the Fourier side information curve, to make it easier to see how much it differs from a constant 1.…”
