Optical Properties of 2D 3R Phase Niobium Disulfide and Its Applications as a Saturable Absorber

Abstract: 2D van der Waals metal 3R phase niobium disulfide (3R‐NbS2) has fascinating anisotropic, magnetic, optical, and superconducting properties. Herein, few‐layered 2D 3R‐NbS2 nanosheets are fabricated by combining liquid phase exfoliation and spin‐coating methods. The first principles calculations are performed to explore their electronic band structures to reveal the metallic properties and enhanced optical absorption as thickness increased. The linear and nonlinear optical properties arising from the plasmonic e… Show more

“…Figure c–e shows the EDS mapping image, which illustrates good distribution uniformity for the Re, Nb, and S elements, respectively. A previous report shows that NbS 2 has three Raman peaks located at 327, 382, and 460 cm –1 . Meanwhile, ReS 2 exhibits two main Raman peaks at 162 and 213 cm –1 , corresponding to the in-plane and out-of-plane vibrational modes, respectively …”

“…Fabrication of few-layered 3R phase niobium disulfide which was characterized with nonlinear absorption coefficient of about of −2.5 × 10 6 cm GW −1 at 1064 nm has led to the use of this material as saturable absorber in nonlinear optical modulators for Yb:KYW mode-locked lasers. [115] Another alternative for a good saturable absorber is 2D titanium disulfide which was introduced for generation of ultrafast pulses in a Ti 2 S-decorated fiber laser and all-optical pulse thresholding with suppressed transmission noise. [116] For nanosheets of another member of 2D TMDCs, silver sulfide (Ag 2 S), a promising value of the saturation light intensity of 250.4 MW cm −2 and 15.5% modulation depth at the telecommunication band was reported.…”

“…In addition, the weak peaks around 205.9 and 209.9 eV can be attributed to the 3d 5/2 and 3d 3/2 signals of Nb 2 O 5 . [41,42] The liquid phase exfoliation method was employed to exfoliate the Nb x Re (1−x) S 2 crystals to nanosheets, which provides a simplicity, cost-effective, efficiency, high scalability, and potentially scalable route for practical fabrication. Initially, the crystals were ground into powder.…”
