A combination of an aspherical hybrid diffractive-refractive lens with a flexible fluidic membrane lens allows the implementation of a light sensitive and wide-aperture optical system with variable focus. This approach is comparable to the vertebrate eye in air, in which the cornea offers a strong optical power and the flexible crystalline lens is used for accommodation. Also following the natural model of the human eye, the decay of image quality with increasing field position is compensated, in the optical system presented here, by successively addressing different tilting angles which mimics saccadic eye-movements. The optical design and the instrumental implementation are presented and discussed, and the working principle is demonstrated.

Zusammenfassung Smartphonekameras stellen wegen ihrer Kompaktheit hohe Anforderungen an Optik und Bildsensoren. Dies erfordert neue technologische Lösungen. Teil 1 dieser Serie aus zwei Folgen stellt die Optik vor. Dabei gibt die flache Bauweise von Smartphones den Kameraabmessungen enge Grenzen vor. Sie erlaubt Brennweiten von nur wenigen Millimetern, auch die Sensoren müssen entsprechend klein sein. Um trotzdem gute Abbildungsleistungen zu erzielen, werden die kleinen Objektive möglichst lichtstark ausgelegt. Bei der kleinen Bauform erhält man eine große Tiefenschärfe. Die kompakte Bauweise erfordert ausschließlich asphärische Linsen. Diese werden so in Kunststoff inklusive Fassungen gefertigt, dass die Objektive durch Aufeinanderstapeln herstellbar sind. Kurze Telebrennweiten lassen sich durch eine Periskopbauweise mit im Smartphonegehäuse quer liegendem Objektiv realisieren. Heutige Smartphones besitzen in der Regel mehrere Kameras mit unterschiedlichen Festbrennweiten vom Weitwinkel‐ bis in den Telebereich. Eine Software kombiniert diese zu optisch‐elektronischen Hybridzooms.

Recent improvements in optics miniaturization have led to the development of multiple techniques in order to perform minimally invasive endoscopic procedures. Among them, the wide-angle lens is often used for its simplicity and ability to collect a large amount of information in one capture. We report the design and analysis of two versions of a wide-angle endoscope with a full field of view of 180 deg. The difference between the two designs resides in the direct control over distortion that was used in order to achieve foveated imaging. By doing so, the local magnification at the center of the image can be controlled during the design process, allowing for a better resolution in the center of the field of view. The design is also folded in order to address certain issue concerning the region of interest during an endoscopic procedure.
