Optical Coherence Tomographic Findings of Combined Hamartoma of the Retina and Retinal Pigment Epithelium in 11 Patients

Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography of Combined Hamartoma of the Retina and Retinal Pigment Epithelium

“…The SD-OCT scans obtained for this patient revealed clear delineation of the posterior vitreous and epiretinal membrane and allowed us to evaluate their relationship with the tumor. The higher-resolution scans from the patient reveal that the epiretinal membrane is separate from the tumor, which was similar to findings reported by Shields et al5 High-resolution SD-OCT shows detailed tumor characteristics, including delineation of the transition from normal to abnormal retina. There may be therapeutic implications for surgically removing the epiretinal membranes if the tumor was sparing the fovea but the epiretinal membrane was distorting it, causing visual deterioration.…”

Thus, OCT may be a useful tool to use in conjunction with fluorescein angiogram in diagnosing this tumor.…”
