PurposeBaseball requires an incredible amount of visual acuity and eye-hand coordination, especially for the batters. The learning objective of this work is to observe that traditional vision training as part of injury prevention or conditioning can be added to a team's training schedule to improve some performance parameters such as batting and hitting.MethodsAll players for the 2010 to 2011 season underwent normal preseason physicals and baseline testing that is standard for the University of Cincinnati Athletics Department. Standard vision training exercises were implemented 6 weeks before the start of the season. Results are reported as compared to the 2009 to 2010 season. Pre season conditioning was followed by a maintenance program during the season of vision training.ResultsThe University of Cincinnati team batting average increased from 0.251 in 2010 to 0.285 in 2011 and the slugging percentage increased by 0.033. The rest of the Big East's slugging percentage fell over that same time frame 0.082. This produces a difference of 0.115 with 95% confidence interval (0.024, 0.206). As with the batting average, the change for University of Cincinnati is significantly different from the rest of the Big East (p = 0.02). Essentially all batting parameters improved by 10% or more. Similar differences were seen when restricting the analysis to games within the Big East conference.ConclusionVision training can combine traditional and technological methodologies to train the athletes' eyes and improve batting. Vision training as part of conditioning or injury prevention can be applied and may improve batting performance in college baseball players. High performance vision training can be instituted in the pre-season and maintained throughout the season to improve batting parameters.

As survival after pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admission has improved over recent years, a key focus now is the reduction of morbidities and optimization of quality of life for survivors. Neurologic disorders and direct brain injuries are the reason for 11-16% of admissions to PICU. In addition, many critically ill children are at heightened risk of brain injury and neurodevelopmental difficulties affecting later life, e.g., complex heart disease and premature birth. Hence, assessment, monitoring and protection of the brain, using fundamental principles of neurocritical care, are crucial to the practice of pediatric intensive care medicine. The assessment of brain function, necessary to direct appropriate care, is uniquely challenging amongst children admitted to the PICU. Challenges in assessment arise in children who are unstable, or pharmacologically sedated and muscle relaxed, or who have premorbid abnormality in development. Moreover, the heterogeneity of diseases and ages in PICU patients, means that high caliber evidence is harder to accrue than in adult practice, nonetheless, great progress has been made over recent years. In this 'state of the art' paper about critically ill children, we discuss 1) patient types at risk of brain injury, 2) new standardized clinical assessment tools for age-appropriate, clinical evaluation of brain function, 3) latest evidence related to cranial imaging, non-invasive and invasive monitoring of the brain, 4) the concept of childhood 'post intensive are syndrome' and approaches for neurodevelopmental follow up. Better understanding of these concepts is vital for taking PICU survivorship to the next level.

Foamy slags are widely practiced in electric arc furnace (EAF) steel production, reducing energy consumption, improving yield, reducing furnace noise, and increasing refractory service life. Control of slag chemistry within a specific range is necessary to achieve maximum benefits from slag foaming. The 'optimum' slag during EAF steel production is MgO saturated, containing a suspension of magnesium wü stite (MgO.FeO) particles. A thermodynamic program, FACTSAGE, was utilised to study a simplified steel slag system containing four slag oxides (MgO-CaO-FeOSiO 2 ), to predict the dual saturation level of CaO and MgO phases and to predict the MgO slag saturation level with variations in oxygen partial pressure, temperature and slag basicity. Results from thermodynamic calculations indicate that there are linear relationships among slag oxides and slag basicity which can be used to predict and control slag chemistry for foaming. Model data were compared with experimental data and models developed by other researchers.
