“…For example several news articles were sourced from The Economic Times which is amongst the top three English business dailies worldwide. News articles are credible data sources, and more studies are utilising “the thematic analysis of text” from online news reports (Berry and Simmons, 2019). “…Textual analysis has gained prominence for extracting the richness of descriptive media texts (Santos, 2006;Hall, 1995). An increasing number of studies are based on, or otherwise include, the thematic analysis of text from various media, including newspapers (Le and Phi, 2020;Liu and Pennington-Gray, 2015;Pitkanen, 2011), magazines (Walters, 2016), travel blogs (Anaya and Lehto, 2020) and online news reports (Berry and Simmons, 2019;Poria et al, 2014;Seo et al, 2018). In this study, relevant articles were first identified via Baidu and Google, respectively, the most influential search engines in Chinese and English, using cognate keywords and terms including "five-star hotels/luxury hotels in China," "economic recession/slowdown," "challenging/difficult times/pressure," "anti-corruption," "competition/competitive," "adaptive/coping strategies/measures" and "productivity."…”

“…Thematic analysis has been applied to a range of studies in the context of social issues and environments (Mughal et al, 2018;Sheiner and Lahav, 2020;Tomkins and Nicholds, 2017;Magrath, 2017;Waller et al, 2020). It has specifically been applied to organisational knowledge management and education (Berry and Simmons, 2019;Calvard, 2016;Millar and Price, 2018). However, despite its popularity, researchers are divided as to its effectiveness and often choose quantitative approaches as alternatives.…”

“…However, the method has come under criticism for its limited underpinnings and effectiveness and some researchers are unsure how to apply thematic analysis effectively to make sense of qualitative data (White et al, 2012;Tomkins and Nicholds, 2017). The method has been applied within various studies (Dark and Carter, 2019; Thematic analysis without paradox Kitchen, 2013;Mughal et al, 2018;Naeem, 2020;Magrath, 2017;Berry and Simmons, 2019;Calvard, 2016;Millar and Price, 2018). Misgivings about thematic analysis are often based on inadequate understanding of its methods and how researchers' insights can be accommodated within a phenomenological framework (Ho, Chiang and Leung, 2017).…”
