On the Values for the Turbulent Schmidt Number in Environmental Flows

Abstract: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has consolidated as a tool to provide understanding and quantitative information regarding many complex environmental flows. The accuracy and reliability of CFD modelling results oftentimes come under scrutiny because of issues in the implementation of and input data for those simulations. Regarding the input data, if an approach based on the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations is applied, the turbulent scalar fluxes are generally estimated by assuming the standa… Show more

“…where β t and β ν are the turbulent and viscous Schmidt numbers (or Prandtl numbers for temperature), here taken as constants. A typical value for liquids as well as gasses is β t = 0.7 (Gualtieri et al, 2017). For the molecular diffusivity, β ν can be estimated from the Stokes-Einstein relation:…”

“…The velocity transects measured with an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) were used to estimate the shear velocities u * from the vertical velocity gradient through the fit of the logarithmic inner law (e.g., Sime et al, 2007;Gualtieri et al, 2018). An average of 30 ADCP "ensembles" (i.e., measurement verticals of velocity), corresponding to about 40 to 70 m in the cross-sectional direction, were required to obtain robust u * values.…”
