On the structure of the mesomorphic form of syndiotactic polystyrene

Abstract: In this contribution, the X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of a highly oriented sample of syndiotactic polystyrene in the mesomorphic form, collected by an automatic diffractometer, is presented, thus providing quantitative and more complete information relative to the diffracted intensity. The structural changes induced by annealing procedures in mesomorphic samples are shown through the analysis of the XRD patterns: both unoriented and oriented mesomorphic samples are transformed gradually into a-form crystal… Show more

“…The pattern is typical for the meso-amodification, described in literature as a zigzag crystalline phase with a very limited ordering, which is usually formed when the amorphous glass of pure sPS is heated just above T g . [20] The FTIR analyses seem to point to the same conformation, thus being also present in the wet state. The formation of this type of structure in solution was only reported up till now by the present authors in the system sPS/cyclohexanol.…”

“…For the sake of simplicity, the scheme of Fig. 1 does not enclose the mesomorphic trans planar [25][26][27] and helical [28] phases, which have been also studied in detail.…”

“…This diffraction pattern was different from that of SC, namely of sPS/AMC cocrystalline form. Rather the pattern was found to be of a trans planar mesomorphic form [16]. It means the all the AMC molecules of SMA are in the amorphous region.…”
