Abstract: Context. In "cool" spectral lines, the smoothed upper edge of the solar chromosphere is prolate in the South-North direction at the epoch of minimum solar activity and nearly spherically symmetric at the maximum phase. We attribute the effect to the dynamical nature of the upper chromosphere, which consists of a large number of small jet-like structures ascending into the corona. We could not resolve the source region of an individual jetlet, although similar but larger structures are visible, especially in EU… Show more

“…This idea is called the melon-seed mechanism (Pneuman 1984). Many people adopted this mechanism to explain the formation of solar surges, spicules, jets, filaments, coronal mass ejections (CMEs), and solar wind expansion (Altschuler et al 1968;Pneuman 1983;Hollweg 2006;Filippov et al 2007Filippov et al , 2009Parashar et al 2013). This mechanism can explain the motion of the bulk of diamagnetic plasmas, but it cannot explain why the corona is much hotter than the underlying chromosphere and photosphere.…”

“…On the polar cap of the Sun spicules are somewhat more numerous than at low latitudes close to the solar equator as they are slightly taller and oriented more radially (Filippov and Koutchmy, 2000).…”

“…The mechanism of spicule formation and evolution is not well understood (for the propulsive mechanisms, see reviews of Sterling 2000; Lorrain and Koutchmy 1996;Filippov et al 2007;Uchida 1961;Bray and Loughhead 1974). Most of spicule features were well described long before (Beckers 1972).…”
