Omicron: Call for updated vaccines

Abstract: The Omicron SARS‐CoV‐2 variant was potentially generated from a chronically infected COVID‐19 patient vaccinated with an messenger RNA (mRNA)‐ or non‐mRNA‐based vaccine, offering the opportunity for the virus to evolve and mutate to evade the body's immune response. To understand the significance of this SARS‐CoV‐2 variant and what it means for the global response to the pandemic, vaccinologists should systematically evaluate the role of mRNA‐ and non‐mRNA‐based vaccines in the generation of novel SARS‐CoV‐2 v… Show more

“…Also, in the same patient, the emergence of the E484K substitution associated with immune escape and the N501Y substitution associated with most VOC were reported, strengthening the hypothesis of intra-host evolution of VOCs ( Kupferschmidt, 2021c ). mRNA- and non-mRNA-based vaccines may have a role in generating Omicron variants in a chronically infected COVID-19 patient, offering the chance for the virus to evolve and mutate, and acquire the ability to escape the body's immune response (breakthrough vaccine-induced immunity) ( Li, 2021 ).…”

“…Formulations of better strategies to design superior vaccine candidates with longer shelf life, higher stability, and ease of immunization like an oral or nasal vaccine are to be opted ( Snehota et al, 2021 ). Presently when there is a high requirement of protecting the population from emerging SARS-CoVB-2 VOCs and VOIs, many mRNA based vaccines might be efficiently designed to meet the pace of emerging variants; however, there is a quest to develop a much more experimental one-shot universal vaccine that can protect individuals for the entire lifetime ( Li, 2021 ).…”

“…The emergence of Omicron has initiated a vaccine efficacy debate ( 275 ). Several scientists suggest booster doses of the vaccines for the fading immunity against the virus, while others favor rapid vaccine improvement to fight against the Omicron ( 276 ).…”
