BackgroundAs academic workload seems to be increasing, many studies examined factors that contribute to the mental workload of academics. Age-related differences in work motives and intellectual ability may lead to differences in experienced workload and in the way employees experience work features. This study aims to obtain a better understanding of age differences in sources of mental workload. 33 academics from one faculty discussed causes of workload during focus group interviews, stratified by age.FindingsAmong our participants, the influence of ageing seems most evident in employees’ actions and reactions, while the causes of workload mentioned seemed largely similar. These individual reactions to workload may also be driven by differences in tenure. Most positively assessed work characteristics were: interaction with colleagues and students and autonomy. Aspects most often indicated as increasing the workload, were organisational aspects as obstacles for ‘getting the best out of people’ and the feeling that overtime seems unavoidable. Many employees indicated to feel stretched between the ‘greediness’ of the organisation and their own high working standards, and many fear to be assigned even less time for research if they do not meet the rigorous output criteria. Moreover, despite great efforts on their part, promotion opportunities seem limited. A more pronounced role for the supervisor seems appreciated by employees of all ages, although the specific interpretation varied between individuals and career stages.ConclusionsTo preserve good working conditions and quality of work, it seems important to scrutinize the output requirements and tenure-based needs for employee supervision.

In this paper, we describe the way to set up the floppy-box Monte Carlo (FBMC) method [L. Filion, M. Marechal, B. van Oorschot, D. Pelt, F. Smallenburg, and M. Dijkstra, Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 188302 (2009)] to predict crystal-structure candidates for colloidal particles. The algorithm is explained in detail to ensure that it can be straightforwardly implemented on the basis of this text. The handling of hard-particle interactions in the FBMC algorithm is given special attention, as (soft) short-range and semi-long-range interactions can be treated in an analogous way. We also discuss two types of algorithms for checking for overlaps between polyhedra, the method of separating axes and a triangular-tessellation based technique. These can be combined with the FBMC method to enable crystal-structure prediction for systems composed of highly shape-anisotropic particles. Moreover, we present the results for the dense crystal structures predicted using the FBMC method for 159 (non)convex faceted particles, on which the findings in [J. de Graaf, R. van Roij, and M. Dijkstra, Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 155501 (2011)] were based. Finally, we comment on the process of crystalstructure prediction itself and the choices that can be made in these simulations.

Neutrino astronomy offers the possibility to perform extra-galactic observations well beyond the photon absorption cutoff above 5 × 10 13 eV. Based on observations of cosmic rays, we already know that astrophysical sources produce particles with at least a million times more energy than this photon cutoff. Once discovered, either the nature of the sources themselves or the cross sections of ultra-high energy neutrinos with terrestrial matter may reveal exotic physical processes that are inaccessible to modern accelerators. Some of these processes may be due to as-yet unknown physics at the grand unification scale or beyond. Neutrino telescopes based on optical techniques currently operating and under construction have apertures measured in several km 3 -sr. Radio and acoustic detection techniques have been demonstrated in laboratory experiments and are currently used for instrumentation of apertures 10 to 10,000 times larger than optical techniques for neutrinos above 10 16 eV. I discuss the status of current and proposed neutrino telescope projects based on these techniques. These telescopes have already ruled out some of the more exotic predictions for neutrino intensity. The upcoming generation of radio-based and acoustic-based detectors should be sensitive to cosmic neutrinos above 10 18 eV originating through the so-called GZK process. A comparison of different neutrino telescopes using a common aperture variable shows how they are complementary in the trade-off of volume versus threshold. I include a proposal for how neutrino telescopes should report their sensitivities to facilitate direct comparisons among them and to allow testing of neutrino brightness models that appear even after publication of the experimental results.
