“…The digital divide between older and younger adults raises concerns, however, about the suitability of technological solutions for older adults, especially for those with impairments. Taking older adults with Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) as a case study, we used user-centred and participatory design approaches to develop an assistive mobile app for self-monitoring their intake of food [12,13]. In this paper we report on findings of a longitudinal field evaluation of our app that was conducted to investigate how it was received and adopted by older adults with AMD and its impact on their lives.…”

“…To demonstrate the successful use of lowcost participatory UCD methods, and in an attempt to contribute to such understanding, we reflect below on our positive experience of and describe lessons learned from adopting and adapting a participatory research approach utilising a range of methods, including participatory design itself, to involve our target users in the design and development of a proof-of-concept healthcare diet diary application for older adults with AMD who have very specific needs and capabilities which degenerate over time. Interested readers are referred to (Hakobyan, et al, 2013b, Hakobyan, et al, 2014 for specific detail on our methods and findings.…”

“…One of the challenges older individuals face is that technology has not always been designed with their specific wants or needs in mind [10]. A participatory design approach can bridge this challenge by including older persons in the design process of health and well-being technologies and services [11-13]. Studies on the implication of Internet of Things for future health care services and devices for older individuals position a participatory approach as critical [14,15].…”
