Off-axis retrieval of orbital angular momentum of light stored in cold atoms

Abstract: However, the calculation shows that the OAM retrieving would get lost at larger angles, reducing the fidelity of such storing-retrieving process. In addition, we have also observed that by applying an external magnetic field to the atomic ensemble the retrieved OAM presents Larmor oscillations, demonstrating the possibility of its manipulation and off-axis retrieval.

“…Besides these recent demonstrations of classical communication using OAM modes, previous work reporting the storage and manipulation of OAM of light have also been published, both in the classical [7,8] and quantum regimes [9]. Also of considerable importance for communication schemes using OAM encoded information is the possibility of retrieving the stored information along different directions in space, as well as the manipulation, through higherorder nonlinearity, of the stored information, which have also been demonstrated [10,11]. Still in the context of communication based on encoded OAM information, another important issue is the possibility of amplification of the encoded signal, which according to our knowledge has not been demonstrated yet.…”

“…reported the storage and retrieval of OAM of light in an atomic ensemble, both in the classical and quantum regimes [10][11][12]. On the other hand, for applications in communications systems it is also important to be able to manipulate the encoded information in OAM beams and we have demonstrated previously that one can perform mathematical operations on beams carrying different OAM using higher-order nonlinear susceptibility [13,14]. Still in this context, another important issue is the possibility of amplification of such laser beams.…”

“…Coherent manipulation of transverse multimode light fields, such as optical modes with representative transverse structures [1][2][3][4] or arbitrary optical images [5][6][7][8], via light-atom interaction is essential for the development of quantum optics and quantum information. External light or magnetic fields can modulate the optical response of the atoms, then change the absorption and dispersion of the optical field propagating through such media.…”
