“…The foci of research and purposes of previous studies in this field have varied, but similar needs could be drawn. For example, common themes within scholarly research were (a) low self-esteem and body image (Barr-Wilson, 2012; Budbill, 2008; DeBate et al, 2009; DeBate & Thompson, 2005; McKenney, 1996), (b) sedentary lifestyles (Barr-Wilson, 2012; Bruening et al, 2009; Budbill, 2008; DeBate et al, 2009; DeBate et al, 2007; Watson et al, 2000), and (c) constraints of femininity (Budbill, 2008; Culp, 1998; Pinch, 2007; Whittington, 2006). Other purposes attended to (a) measuring program effectiveness (Barr-Wilson, 2012; Bruening et al, 2009; Budbill, 2008; McKenney, 1996; Whittington & Mack, 2010; Whittington et al, 2011); (b) enhancing program development (Culp, 1998; Denner et al, 2010; Watson et al, 2000); (c) adding to the small, existing research base (Whittington, 2006); (d) determining benefits of a strengths-based approach (Passarelli et al, 2010); and (e) understanding relational aggression and relationship building (Barr-Wilson, 2012; Sammet, 2010).…”
