Oestrogen treatment for tall stature in girls: estimating the effect on height and the error in height prediction

Abstract: On average, oestrogen treatment resulted in an adult height that was less than predicted. Although treatment was more effective in the least mature girls, the mean height difference was relatively modest for most treated girls.

“…Articles with high-dose synthetic EE2 or conjugated estrogens. Height reduction due to treatment with EE2 or conjugated estrogens varies among different studies, and height reductions of 1.4-7.4 cm have been reported (2,(6)(7)(8)(16)(17)(18). Variation in the height reduction achieved with EE2 or conjugated estrogens treatment is probably due to methodological differences.…”

“…Variation in the height reduction achieved with EE2 or conjugated estrogens treatment is probably due to methodological differences. This, differences in BA measurement method, PAH method, BA and chronological age at start of treatment, EE2 doses used and differences in treatment duration may all influence response (2,(6)(7)(8)(16)(17)(18).…”

“…High-dose estrogen therapy has been documented to effectively reduce adult height in extremely tall girls (Goldzieher, 1956; Venn et al, 2008). However, the long-term effects of such treatment has to be considered.…”

“…Analysis of pooled data from several studies predict a growth-attenuating effect of 6 Ϯ 1.5 cm at a bone age of 10 years, 3 Ϯ 1.0 cm at a bone age of 12 years, and no effect at a bone age of 14 years. 10 Whether the slope of this regression line can be extrapolated to initiation of treatment at much younger bone ages is not known, but on the basis of height outcomes of children with naturally occurring untreated precocious puberty, it is reasonable to expect a potential growth attenuating effect significantly Ͼ6 cm.…”
