Oceanography Database Development in Bangka Seas

Abstract: Bangka island is the biggest island in Bangka Belitung Province and located between Sumatra and Kalimantan Island. Furthermore, Bangka seas are connecting Natuna sea with Java sea and also become a important part of Indonesia Throughflow. This geographic condition makes Bangka island has a unique oceanography characteristics. However, the information of oceanography database of the Bangka waters remains limited. Thus, the purpose of this research is to develop a oceanography database in Bangka seas to support … Show more

“…These currents exhibit a consistent north-to-south flow during the West Monsoon (December to February), and the opposite direction during the East Monsoon (June to August) [89]. The coastal areas of Bangka Island exhibit current velocities ranging from 0 to 0.6 m/s [90], which are slightly higher compared to the Bangka Strait, whose velocities range from 0 to 0.452 m/s [91]. Notably, research from [92] demonstrates that these currents can disperse particles within a radius of 16 miles.…”

“…The lower SST in the northern waters is likely due to the water current from the South China Sea associated with north-east monsoon winds (Kok et al 2015). In contrast, during the east monsoon (June to August), the northern waters are generally warmer than the southern waters because of the cooler waters from the Java Sea enter the region (Kok et al 2015;Ambalika et al 2019). Because of this northsouth-north shift in water currents, the Kepulauan Riau waters were warmer in April, May, and June than in other months.…”

“…Winds blow from Asia to Australia during the East Monsoon, and vice versa during the West Monsoon. These winds greatly influence the current patterns of the Bangka Belitung Seas (Pamungkas, 2018) because geographically the Bangka Belitung Seas are between two oceans (Natuna and Java Seas) and between two large islands (Sumatera and Kalimantan Islands) (Ambalika et al, 2019). Currents during the East Monsoon follow the direction of the wind and predominantly flow from the south (the Java Seas) to the north (the Natuna Sea) (Figure 4.).…”
