OCCURRENCE OF ETIOLOGICAL AGENTS CAUSING SUBCLINICAL MASTITIS IN MORADA NOVA AND SANTA INÊS EWES / Ocorrência dos agentes etiológicos causadores de mastite subclínica em ovelhas das raças morada nova e Santa Inês.

Abstract: SUMMARYThis study aimed to determine the occurrence of the etiologic agents of subclinical mastitis in Santa Inês and Morada Nova ewes and their susceptibility to developing the disease when submitted to the same management conditions. We analyzed 250 mammary glands of 130 Santa Inês ewes and 143 mammary glands of 77 Morada Nova ewes. The California Mastitis Test, somatic cell counts and microbiological analysis were performed at the moment of drying off. The occurrences of subclinical mastitis in different br… Show more

“…Several studies suggest that CoNS are the most common cause of sheep mastitis (BARILLET et al, 2001;SANTANA et al, 2013), with a prevalence ranging from 25 to 93% in ewes with intramammary infection (BERGONIER & BERTHELOT, 2003).…”

“…Mastitis caused by coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) has been reported as one of the leading factors affecting milk and dairy production in sheep (BARILLET et al, 2001;SANTANA et al, 2013). In its subclinical form, sheep mastitis is undetectable except for a persistent reduction in milk output (up to 50% of daily volume) (KIOSSIS et al, 2013).…”
