Abstract: Lesions in the floor of the mouth can be a challenging diagnosis due to the variety of pathological conditions that might be found in this area. Within a broad range of lesions, attention has to be addressed to those that require specific management, such as a dermoid cyst (DC) and a ranula. Especially in pediatric patients, in whom the failure of diagnosis can postpone the correct treatment and cause sequelae later in life. DC, a developmental anomaly, is managed primarily by surgical resection. On the other … Show more

“…To our knowledge, 33 cases of dermoid cysts of the oral floor have been described in the literature for the last decade. The ratio of males to females was 1.5:1 (20:13) and the average age was 20.1 years (5 months‐66 years) . The age of the current patient was inconsistent with that reported previously.…”

“…Cases of dermoid cysts preoperatively diagnosed ranulae are present in literature 1,2,[4][5][6] . This may be due to their similar clinical presentation, as both are painless, soft and compressible lesions, which can cause tongue fullness, with subsequent difficulty with swallowing, speech and breathing 1,7 . However, ranulae usually present with a blue, dome-shaped swelling, located lateral to the midline.…”

“…It rarely becomes malignant (7). It is cured by marsupialization of the cyst wall or removal of the cyst along with the salivary gland (1,2,8). The dermoid cyst, on the other hand, is created by an incorrect displacement of the ectoderm in the process of embryogenesis.…”
