Occurrence and clonal relatedness of sec/tst-gene positive Staphylococcus aureus isolates of quartermilk samples of cows suffering from mastitis

Abstract: Aims: To investigate the prevalence of sec/tst-gene positive Staphylococcus aureus in bovine mastitis and to get information about the clonal relatedness of these clinical isolates. Methods and Results: A total of 533 Staph. aureus strains isolated from bovine mastitic quartermilk samples at 493 randomized dairy farms in Hessia, Germany, from January 1997 until June 1998 were examined for enterotoxin C (sec) gene and toxic shock syndrome toxin (tst) gene by multiplex polymerase chain reaction. Fiftythree (9AE3… Show more

“…Strains of S. aureus have been observed to produce numerous putative virulent extracellular factors (protein A, clumping factor, fibronectin, fibrinogen, collagen and pseudo capsule ligand binding proteins etc. ), enzymes (hemolysins, coagulase, nucleases, and collagenase), and enterotoxins, and exfoliative toxins (Sutra and Poutrel 1994;Zschöck et al 2004;Reinoso et al 2008). The adhesin genes have been attributed to express different proteins that are imperatively involved in the adhesion, invasion, and infection of S. aureus (Palma et al 1999;Zecconi et al 2005).…”

“…In studies in which the production of staphylococcal virulence factors has been detected, most S. aureus isolates originating from bovine mastitis specimens have been shown to produce alpha-and beta-hemolysin and leukocidins or carry the respective genes (1,34). Some superantigen determinants in particular, like sec and tst, have been common and typical for certain genetic lineages (9,51). The genes seg to seo, which belong to the enterotoxigenic cluster egc, have been found frequently in S. aureus isolates from bovine mastitis specimens (9,10,40).…”

“…tst gene was detected together with sec gene in 107 (97.3%) isolates in this study. A positive correlation between sec-tst genes has been reported in previous studies 11,12 . Co-existence of these genes could be explained by presence of sec gene on a pathogenicity island together with tst 13 .…”
