Occupancy and relative abundances of introduced ungulates on New Zealand’s public conservation land 2012–2018

Abstract: Introduced ungulates are an important management issue on New Zealand's public conservation land (PCL). Ungulates are harvested by recreational and commercial hunters, with some government-funded culling. A robust monitoring system is needed to reliably report trends in occupancy and abundance, and to evaluate management effectiveness. We first describe the design and implementation of a monitoring programme enabling ungulate occupancy and relative abundances to be estimated on New Zealand's PCL. Monitoring si… Show more

“…Deer populations are increasing in many parts of the world, sometimes causing undesirable economic, social, environmental and human health impacts (reviews in McShea et al 1997;Côté et al 2004;Carpio et al 2021). There is particular concern about the impacts of deer in Australasia, where they are non-native (Forsyth et al 2010a;Davis et al 2016) and many populations are increasing in size and geographic range (Moriarty 2004;Moloney et al 2021;.…”

“…Given these shifts towards open science practices around data and code for computational reproducibility, it is perhaps unsurprising that the New Zealand Journal of Ecology has recently seen an increase in the number of papers published for which the authors wish to share the data or code underpinning their work (e.g. McArthur et al 2019;Wood et al 2020;Gollin et al 2021;McCarthy et al 2021;Moloney et al 2021). The New Zealand Journal of Ecology does not currently have any policies or processes around data and code associated with its articles, even though journal standards are recognised as a mechanism that could help improve reproducibility (Fig.…”

“…With the decline in the commercial venison industry and reduction in hunting pressure, ungulate populations have increased steadily over the last two decades (Forsyth et al 2011;Moloney et al 2021). Anecdotal evidence suggests that they are now recognised increasingly as problematic in both agricultural and some urban settings (Stuff 2021(Stuff , 2023.…”
