Abstract: ABSTRACT. The food preference of Obama anthropophila Amaral, Leal-Zanchet & Carbayo, 2015, a species that seems to be spreading across Brazil's human-modified environments, was investigated. Extensive experiments led to the conclusion that the generalized diet of this species may have facilitated its dispersal. The analysis of 132 feeding records of 44 geoplaninid species revealed a tendency for closely related species to feed on individuals from similar taxonomic groups, suggesting that in this group behavior… Show more

“…Cephaloflexa bergi preys on harvestmen of several other species, and on a variety of other arthropods, namely Tenebrio sp. larvae, cricket Gryllus , insect larvae, and woodlice (Cseh et al ., ). Contrasting to other flatworms that consume armored prey (see Boll & Leal‐Zanchet, ), C. bergi does not perforate them.…”

“…Land flatworms, or land planarians (Platyhelminthes, Geoplanidae) are hermaphroditic, nocturnal and photophobic animals that feed on a wide variety of invertebrates (Winsor, Johns & Barker, 2004;Cseh, Carbayo & Froehlich, 2017). They may find prey using tactile, chemical or visual cues (Ogren, 1995), and capture and subdue them with the use of physical force and adhesive mucus that may contain neurotoxins (Ogren, 1995;Jones & Cumming, 1998;Stokes et al, 2014;Boll & Leal-Zanchet, 2015).…”

“…Another interpretation of the broad bodies of large land flatworms is that this facilitates capture and subdual of prey (cf. Cseh et al 2017), i.e., forms an evolutionary adaptation to new kinds of terrestrial prey not encountered by their aquatic ancestors.…”

“…Such characteristics compel them to remain hidden during the day in humid refuges, as for example the leaf litter and under stones or fallen logs ( Antunes, Leal-Zanchet & Fonseca, 2012 ). They are predators of other invertebrates ( Froehlich, 1955a ; Ogren, 1995 ; Prasniski & Leal-Zanchet, 2009 ; Boll & Leal-Zanchet, 2016 ; Cseh, Carbayo & Froehlich, 2017 ). Land triclads have restricted locomotion capacity over long distances, so there are many endemic species ( Sluys, 1995 ).…”
