Observation of pressure induced charge density wave order and eightfold structure in bulk VSe2

Abstract: Pressure-induced charge density wave (CDW) state can overcome the low-temperature limitation for practical application, thus seeking its traces in experiments is of great importance. Herein, we provide spectroscopic evidence for the emergence of room temperature CDW order in the narrow pressure range of 10–15 GPa in bulk VSe2. Moreover, we discovered an 8-coordination structure of VSe2 with C2/m symmetry in the pressure range of 35–65 GPa by combining the X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction experi… Show more

“…At this pressure, 1T -VSe 2 undergoes a first-order phase transition to a new C2/m phase, which destroys the charge order and allows SC to emerge [45]. Furthermore, high-pressure Raman [94], x-ray diffraction, and spectroscopic experiments [50] confirmed the transition to the C2/m phase proceeds at RT, similar to the 1T '-structures of ditellurides (Nb,Ta)Te 2 [95].…”

“…In addition to the collapse of the low-energy phonon mode at q CDW and T CDW , the longitudinal and transverse acoustic branches also undergo weak phonon anomalies, highlighting the 3D nature of the charge correlations. Furthermore, the critical phonon does not soften as one heads towards the RT high-pressure transition, indicating that the transition from P3m1 to the C2/m symmetry [50] is of first-order type. We explain how the phonon anomalies of VSe 2 are well captured when anharmonic effects are included in the calculations with an appropriate inclusion of vdW forces.…”
