Observation of Photon Polarization in thebsγTransition

Abstract: This Letter presents a study of the flavor-changing neutral current radiative B AE → K AE π ∓ π AE γ decays performed using data collected in proton-proton collisions with the LHCb detector at 7 and 8 TeV centerof-mass energies. In this sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb −1 , nearly 14 000 signal events are reconstructed and selected, containing all possible intermediate resonances with a K AE π ∓ π AE final state in the ½1.1; 1.9 GeV=c 2 mass range. The distribution of the angle of the … Show more

“…Measurements of the time-dependent CP asymmetries in radiative heavy meson decays have been performed by the BaBar and Belle collaborations in the B 0 system only [11]. The production of polarised photons in b → sγ transitions was observed for the first time at LHCb by studying the up-down asymmetry in B + → K + π − π + γ decays [14]. All these measurements are found to be in agreement with the SM predictions.…”

“…The up-down asymmetry has been measured by the LHCb experiment in four different regions of the mass of the Kππ system [151]. The result of this analysis is shown in Fig.…”

“…The value of the asymmetry is proportional to the photon polarization. LHCb has made (independent) measurements of A ud in four bins of the Kππ mass [24], as indicated on figure 5. Over the four bins, up-down asymmetries are seen to be different from zero at the level of 5.2σ, giving the first observation of photon polarization in b → sγ transitions.…”
