Observation of Erythrocyte Dynamics in the Retinal Capillaries and Choriocapillaris Using ICG-Loaded Erythrocyte Ghost Cells

Abstract: Reinjected ICG-loaded erythrocytes permit routine visualization of retinal capillary and choriocapillaris hemodynamics of the intact eye. It is speculated that erythrocyte-pausing in both microcirculations facilitates metabolic exchange across capillary walls. In retinal capillaries, pausing is presumed to result from vasomotion-which has been postulated as necessary for the inhibition of retinal edema-and in choriocapillaries, to result from the shifting distributions of local perfusion pressures within the n… Show more

“…Additional effects of blood such as tumbling and high viscosity could cause these observed differences as well. [52][53][54], this suggests that SSADA is well suited for detailed angiography down to the capillary level. However, decorrelation signal should be saturated even at the capillary level according to our phantom calibration.…”

“…Moreover, intentional RBC membrane damage or surface modifications allow direct targeting of specific tissues and organs. 81 98 RBCs can be used also as potential biocompatible carriers of sensing assays for long-term monitoring when they are loaded with fluorescent sensors, developing constructs 101 Other authors demonstrate that gold nanoparticleincorporated RBCs could be used as blood flow tracers for the enhancement of the contrast in dynamic X-ray imaging compared to static imaging 102 providing valuable information for clinical diagnosis and treatment of circulatory disorders.…”

“…The molecular weight of ICG is twice as great as that of fluorescein. ICG is very amphiphilic, whereas fluorescein is rather hydrophilic and its liposolubility is quite limited 16. The crucial difference between ICG and fluorescein comes from their binding affinity to proteins.…”
