Abstract: Helminths can be transmitted to human beings in several ways, but little attention has been given to vector or mechanical transmission of infective forms by insects. The present study surveys the helminth species present in three orders of insects that coexist in proximity with the human environment. A total of 700 insects (54 Blattodea, 275 Diptera, and 371 Hymenoptera) were collected and examined externally and individually. In the Blattodea order, only specimens of Periplaneta americana were collected, and … Show more

“…To date, more than four thousand species have been identified worldwide, of which only 1% are related to human environment (Thyssen et al 2004). In Argentina 33 genera and 84 species have been cited (Crespo and Valverde 2005), Periplaneta americana (family Blattidae) being one of the most important domestic pests.…”

“…Due the nesting habits of this species -presenting large numbers of individuals per colony -and also due to their growing proximity to the urban environment, they could act as important carriers of this nematode species here tested. However, Thyssen et al (2004) concluded that ants were not mechanical vectors of helminthes when collected inside and in the vicinity of residences in Campinas, SP, Brazil, although no ants of this species were recorded in their samples. Results showed that size influence the transportation of pathogens for facilitating adhesion of the parasites.…”

“…A mechanical vector usually contaminates itself when in contact with infected materials, transporting the parasites around and eventually into human food (Leser et al, 2000). The principal insects as the mechanical vectors of pathogens belonged to the orders Diptera, Blattodea and Hymenoptera (Oliveira et al, 2002;Thyssen et al, 2004). Some ant species known as 'tramp ants', belonging to the Formicidae have drawn particular attention in this regard.…”

“…Thyssen et al (2004) levantaram as espécies de helmintos presentes em três ordens de insetos que convivem próximo ao ambiente humano e avaliaram o papel dos indivíduos das ordens Blattodea, Diptera e Hymenoptera na vetoração mecânica de ovos de Oxyuridae, Ascaridae, Toxocaridae e Cestoda, bem como larvas de nematoda. Concluíram que os blatódeos são os principais vetores de tais parasitos.…”
