Objective: Tobacco consumption among low and middle-income countries where food insecurity remains a challenge poses several concerns. This review examines the available global evidence linking smokeless tobacco (SLT) use with public health nutrition and its implications. Design: Systematic review of articles extracted from PubMed and Scopus from January 2000 to December 2020. Setting: Included studies that demonstrated the relationship between SLT and nutrition-related factors i.e., body mass index, malnutrition, anemia, poor birth outcomes, and metabolic disorders. PRISMA guidelines have been followed to conduct the systematic evidence review. Participants: A total of 34 studies were finally used in the systematic review, which included Cross-Sectional (31), and Cohort (3). Results: SLT use has a huge impact on body weight, alteration in taste, poor oral health, and consumption of fruits and vegetables leading to malnutrition. Maternal use of SLT not only leads to anemia but also hampers birth outcomes. Increased risk of metabolic syndrome and gallstone disease among SLT users are also well documented in the studies. Conclusion: The review highlights the linkages between SLT usage and poor nutritional outcomes. Tobacco control efforts should be convergent with public health nutrition to achieve overall health benefits. Attention is also required to explore suitable mechanisms for SLT cessation combined with enhancing food and nutrition security at the community level in sync with investments in public health nutrition intervention.

Background: This cross-sectional study was undertaken to assess the nutritional status in relation to socio-economic determinants among sabar tribes of Jhargram district, West Bengal.Methods: Nutritional status of 169 children, adolescent and adult male and female tribal people was taken to measure body height, body weight and BMI. Socio economic status including family income, occupation, family size, educational status, source of drinking water, use of sanitary latrine, smoking habit and prevalence of diseases among sabar tribal people was recorded by questionnaire study.Results: Undernutrition is prominent among sabar children and adolescent. The people of this area were relatively underprivileged to access to safe drinking water and sanitary latrine. The health status of sabar people of this locality was associated strongly with family income and educational status. Although other factors like safe drinking water ,use of sanitary latrine, occupation , no of children in a family, smoking habit showed insignificant association. Besides, occupation and life style related diseases were very common among adult sabars.Conclusions: Percentage prevalence of undernourished people especially children and adolescent in this study is large, they required a variety of interventions to improve quality of life like- assessment of nutritional status, causes of nutritional deficiencies and imbalance, formulation of diet plan and its implementation where required.

Background: Anemia is a major preventable public health concern among the pregnant women worldwide. The present study aims at determining the prevalence of anemia among tribal pregnant women at Trivandrum district, Kerala and identifying its socioeconomic and gynaecological risk factors.Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted among tribal women attending antenatal clinics of Vithura and Kuttichal Government hospitals at Kerala, India. Sample size was calculated as 117. All consecutive subjects fitting the inclusion criteria were included in the study until the sample size was achieved. Patients were interviewed using a semi structured questionnaire which includes socio demographic, cultural and nutritional factors. Hemoglobin measurement was done while first antenatal visit using semi auto hemo-analyzer. Data obtained were analyzed using SPSS software. Statistical test used was either Chi-square test or student t-test.Results: The prevalence of anemia among the tribal pregnant women attending primary health care in Trivandrum during the study tenure was 53.33%. The prevalence of mild, moderate and severe anemia was observed as 26.66%, 25% and 1.66% respectively. The mean serum haemoglobin level among the study group was found to be 10.64 gm%. The major risk factors associated with anemia were figured out to be low body mass index, low family income, high parity, joint family, exposure to passive smoking and pan chewing, irregular intake of iron and folic acid supplements, hyperemesis and absence of deworming.Conclusions: Focus shall be given on creating awareness among tribal women regarding the need for dietary and lifestyle modification to decrease the prevalence of anemia among them.
