Numerical Simulations and Observations of Surface Wave Fields under an Extreme Tropical Cyclone

Abstract: The performance of the wave model WAVEWATCH III under a very strong, category 5, tropical cyclone wind forcing is investigated with different drag coefficient parameterizations and ocean current inputs. The model results are compared with field observations of the surface wave spectra from an airborne scanning radar altimeter, National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) time series, and satellite altimeter measurements in Hurricane Ivan (2004). The results suggest that the model with the original drag coefficient paramet… Show more

“…To generate time-dependent wave spectra a third generation wave model is deployed, WAVEWATCH III (WW3) (Tolman 2009), which has been modified previously to better match with observed hurricane wave fields (Fan et al 2009). WW3 solves the spectral wave action equation for the directional frequency spectra [i.e., F(v, u), where omega is the wave frequency and theta denotes the wave propagation direction].…”

“…This regime features rapidly turning wind stress and temporally evolving wave fields that are a complex interacting mix of wind waves and swell with multiple spectral peaks propagating in directions misaligned with the surface winds (Wright et al 2001;Fan et al 2009). The hurricaneforced OBL then allows an assessment of Langmuir turbulence in a highly nonequilibrium wind wave regime.…”

“…Due to their spatial and temporal flexibilities, numerical models are well suited for studying the spectral pattern of waves generated by cyclones (Moon et al [14]; Kumar and Stone [15]; Zhou et al [16]; Fan et al [17]; Kim et al [18]). Zhou et al [16] used WAVEWATCH-III simulation results to study wave fields and the spectral variations produced by Typhoon Damrey that passed over the South China Sea in September 2005.…”
