Numerical Simulation of Hydraulically Induced Fracture Network Propagation in Shale Formation

Abstract: Hydraulic fracturing treatment has been proven to be one of the key technologies for shale gas development. Micro-seismic mapping data has shown that hydraulic fracturing stimulation has often resulted in complex fracture network due to the geological complexity of shale formations. Hydraulic fracturing is a coupled process of shale formation deformation and flow of engineered fluid that includes water, proppant and other chemicals. Moreover, the pre-existing natural fractures in shale formation may complicate… Show more

“…The basic data is shown in Table 2, and multi-stage hydraulic fracture distribution is shown is Figure 3. Using the above well data well producing rate is calculated based on bi-wing hydraulic fracture model and our previous model (Li, 2012(Li, , 2013. As shown in Figure 4, compared to bi-wing model our numerical result have a better agreement with real-world measured well producing rate.…”

“…(2) Hydraulic fracture network prediction Based on the above natural fracture distribution, hydraulic fracture network is proposed using our previous model (Li, 2012(Li, , 2013. During this process interaction between hydraulic fracture and large-scale natural fracture, turbulent flow in fracture, and influence of natural fracture on rock property (i.e., Young's modulus and Possion's ratio) are considered.…”

“…The highly non-linear equations in this model was solved numerically based on various data, such as formation information data, logging data, fluid property, and hydraulic fracture treatment data and so on. Combining turbulence flow, interaction of hydraulic and natural fractures, and influence of natural fractures on rock properties, Li et al proposed a model to predict fracture network propagation in shale formations (Li, 2012(Li, , 2013. This model also predicts the large scale fracture network.…”
