Novel compensation method for electromagnetic performance of dielectric radome based on reflector shaping

Abstract: From the viewpoint of geometrical optics, dielectric radome degrades the electromagnetic performance of the enclosed antenna by distorting the amplitude distribution and phase distribution of aperture field, of which the latter is mainly responsible for the distortion of far-field pattern. A novel method based on reflector shaping is proposed to compensate the phase distortion of aperture field caused by radome. The aperture field of the shaped reflector antenna possesses a phase distribution, which has an inv… Show more

“…where T H and T V are the transmission coefficients of the composite structure (skin and honeycomb) for horizontal and vertical polarisation EM waves, and could be obtained according to their geometric and physical parameters based on ray tracing approach [6,28]. Subscripts H and V indicate the horizontal and vertical polarisations of EM wave, respectively.…”

“…A dual band radome with sandwich wall construction was proposed in [10]. Xu et al proposed new radome design methods based on particle swarm optimization [11], better thickness profiling [12,17], and reflector shaping [13] to obtain improved radome electromagnetic (EM) performance [14][15][16]. In all these works, a typical antenna radome system was analyzed using the geometrical optics based 3D ray tracing method in conjunction with aperture integration.…”

“…The effects of the radome on the enclosed antenna system are considerably complicated such as gain loss, boresight error, an increase in the sidelobe level, and distortion of the power pattern [6,7], which are not negligible in many cases, in particular as far as high-precision applications are concerned including ground monitoring stations, geodetic mapping, seismic monitoring, and bridge deformation monitoring. Therefore, minimizing the EM performance degradation is the primary task in the design of a radome [8,9].…”
