Abstract: Histoplasmosis is a worldwide-distributed deep mycosis that affects healthy and immunocompromised hosts. Severe and disseminated disease is especially common in HIV-infected patients. At least 11 phylogenetic species are recognized and the majority of diversity is found in Latin America. The northeastern region of Brazil has one of the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence in Latin America and Ceará State has one of the highest death rates due to histoplasmosis in the world, where the mortality rate varies between 33–42… Show more

“…Though research has been inconclusive, there is some evidence suggesting that sexuality plays a role in Mucorales virulence [194], while in Ustilago, maydis, the ability to produce disease in plants relies on mating [195]. In clinical samples from patients with HIV, Damasceno et al (2019) found different ratios of mating types for H. capsulatum and that coinfection with different genotypes led to recombination and could affect the course of the disease, ultimately increasing the risk of disseminated histoplasmosis [196]. Regarding the role played by mating in Paracoccidioides virulence, there are gaps in the research that still require answers.…”

“…farciminosum, which causes lymphangitis in horses in the Old World. Insights from phylogenetic studies have now replaced this classical denomination and shown that the causal pathogens of histoplasmosis include different regionally specific cryptic species, a classification that gradually gains in detail as the sampling of isolates from different parts of the world grows (Teixeira et al, 2016;Sepuĺveda et al, 2017;Damasceno et al, 2019). African histoplasmosis, is located primarily in cutaneous and subcutaneous tissue (Cockshott and Lucas, 1964).…”
