Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to develop an antibacterial mouthguard (MG) material using a masterbatch of silvernanoparticle-embedded ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers. In order to verify that the testing material was clinically applicable as an antibacterial MG material, we conducted an antibacterial test, a shock absorption test, and analysis of in vitro silver release. The colony-forming activity of Streptococcus sobrinus, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Escherichia coli were significantly inhibi… Show more

“…This new material proved to be bacteriostatic against Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis and it has no cytotoxic effect on human gingival cells [ 70 ]. Yoshida et al showed that silver nanoparticles, embedded in the EVA matrix, exhibited effective antibacterial properties against Streptococcus sobrinus, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Escherichia coli , thus suggesting the use of this material for the construction of mouthguards [ 71 ].…”

“…All discussions of preventive practices should be tailored to the individual, and dentists should stay informed of the current guidelines by their associated sports regulatory bodies to ensure they are providing optimum care. Dentists, and especially team dentists, should consider local advocacy in sports organizations in their area to mandate mouthguard use during practice and games 41 . Finally, dentists should stay up to date on the most recent developments in research surrounding oral protection devices so they can provide the best recommendations to their patients.…”

“…In terms of delaying the transmitted impact force, all specimens fabricated in this study could not be approximated to the conventional MG materials, and therefore further studies will be required. For example, this quality may be improved by applying an enclosing arrangement of air cells [43] or by incorporating a particle dispersion structure [21,44], three-dimensional network structure [45], or cellular structures [46].…”

“…Currently, research is being conducted to investigate the reinforcement effects of MGs that utilize titanium or glass fiber [18,19]. Studies have also been conducted to develop new MG materials with high functionalities [20,21]. Yoshida et al have successfully developed a novel antibacterial mouthguard material manufactured using a silvernanoparticle-embedded EVA copolymer masterbatch [21].…”
