Normal values of the mitral-aortic intervalvular fibrosa thickness: A multimodality study

Abstract: Background:The avascular region of the fibrous body between the mitral and aortic valves, named mitral-aortic intervalvular fibrosa (MAIVF), is often involved in the periaortic diffusion of infective endocarditis (IE), resulting in abscess or pseudoaneurysm formation. The early recognition of these life-threatening complications is of crucial importance, as urgent surgical correction is necessary. In the first stages of the abscess formation, the only sign is an increased thickness of the MAIVF. To the best of… Show more

“…He is still working as a salesman and is satis ed with his quality of life since his symptoms such as dyspnea have improved signi cantly. Discussion and literature review A PMAIF is a recognized issue associated with both infective endocarditis of the aortic valve and arti cial aortic valve implantation (10). While larger instances of PMAIF might be identi ed through TTE (8), the diagnosis of a PMAIF typically necessitates TEE (11).…”

“…The mitral-aortic intervalvular fibrosa (MAIVF) is an avascular frail fibrous structure that delineates the anterior mitral leaflet from the posterior portion of the aortic root. It is bounded by the pericardium in the upper part, and the left atrium in the posterolateral part; the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) represents the lower limit of the MAIVF [1,2]. Pseudoaneurysm of the mitral-aortic intervalvular fibrosa (P-MAIVF), first described by Waldhausen et al, usually ensues as a consequence of infective endocarditis (IE) or valve surgery.…”
