Nonmotor Symptoms in Patients with Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 10

Abstract: Introduction Nonmotor symptoms (NMS) have been described in several neurodegenerative diseases but have not been systematically evaluated in spinocerebellar ataxia type 10 (SCA10). Objective To compare the frequency of NMS in patients with SCA10, Machado-Joseph disease (MJD) and healthy controls. Methods Twenty-eight SCA10, 28 MJD and 28 healthy subjects were prospectively assessed using validated screening tools for chronic pain, autonomic symptoms, fatigue, sleep disturbances, psychiatric disorders, and … Show more

“…Cognitive decline and ID are non-motor symptoms described in several types of SCAs [ 55 , 56 ]. A recent work attempted to predict type and severity of cognitive issues in the expanded-polyglutamine tracts SCAs according to the underlying genetic diagnosis (i.e., SCA type 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, and 17 and dentato pallidoluysian atrophy) [ 57 ].…”

“…In SCA3, many types of sleep disturbances have been reported, including periodic limb movements during sleep (PLMS), RBD, RLS, EDS, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) 12 . PLMS and RLS account for 20%‐45% in SCA3 in various studies 13 . However, the risk factors for these sleep disturbances in SCA3 are not yet known.…”

“…In treatment strategies, all treatable factors for fatigue should be addressed, especially depression, visual symptoms, and sleeping disorders 17 . Fatigue is more commonly observed in SCA3 followed by SCA6 and SCA10 13,18 …”

“…As a common symptom, fatigue was found to have great impact on the quality of life in PD (13)(14)(15)(16). Fatigue is also a pronounced non-motor symptom in SCAs (17)(18)(19), especially in SCA3 patients, with a high prevalence around 52.9-63.5% (3,20,21). The significant predictors of fatigue, such as length of expanded CAG repeats, excessive daytime somnolence, and mood disorders such as anxiety and major depression have been explored (3,19,20,22,23).…”
