“…Data from Scotland show an ASMR for the same years as this study as 0.67/ 100,000 for men and 0.29/100,000 for females [19]. Lewis and Weinstock [17] calculated an ASMR of 0.47/100,000 (combined males and females) for all NMSC deaths in Rhode Island for the years 1988-2000. The higher mortality rates in WA are consistent with the much higher incidence.…”

“…Two consecutive studies of NMSC deaths in Rhode Island (one from 1978-1987 and one from 1988-2000) found that a significant proportion of deaths attributed to NMSC were miscoded [16,17]. The earlier study reported over 50% of NMSC cases were miscoded, while the later study used a more rigorous definition to report that 44% of confirmed NMSC deaths and 34% of probable NMSC deaths were miscoded [16,17]. A previous Australian study reported that 23% of NMSC deaths were misclassified, the majority of these deaths being due to AIDS-related Kaposi sarcoma [14].…”

“…2,3 Although less common than BCC, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the skin carries a Ͼ10-fold higher risk of metastasis and mortality. 4 Surgical treatment of BCC and SCC is frequently disfiguring, and local recurrence is not uncommon. Clearly, BCC and SCC constitute serious health problems.…”

“…[1][2][3] Mortality rates from a population-based follow-back study for nonmelanoma skin cancer was 0.91 per 100,000 per year. 4 However, unlike other cancers in which end points focus on mortality, morbidity is critical to understanding the burden of disease for KCs, as these skin cancers are generally not fatal, but may lead to severe disfigurement and related complications.…”
