Nonlinear Model Predictive Control for Thermal Management in Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Abstract: Abstract-A nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) for the thermal management (TM) of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) is presented. TM in PHEVs is crucial to ensure good components performance and durability in all possible climate scenarios. A drawback of accurate TM solutions is the higher electrical consumption due to the increasing number of low voltage (LV) actuators used in the cooling circuits. Hence, more complex control strategies are needed for minimizing components thermal stress and at t… Show more

“…From the literature survey, only countable articles are obtained in this domain throughout the search. Among few Lopez-Sanz et.al., 109 focused to propose non-linear MPC for thermal management during battery charging based on the constraints of maximum and minimum acceptable values for the temperature states and actuator controls. It has been tested with six different driving cycles.…”

“…Nonlinear model predictive control was used in [11] for vehicle cabin temperature control with evaporator temperature setpoint and blower speed as controlled variables. NMPC applied on Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) thermal management (battery, charger and power electronics cooling) was successfully tested in a Software in the Loop (SIL) simulation [12] and then tested in the real environment [13]. Model predictive on-off control for cabin heating in ICE vehicles was developed and implemented in [14].…”

“…There are some researchers use the ANN-based controller for air conditioning systems (Li et al, 2013;Li et al, 2015;Yang et al, 2016). Concerning model predictive control (MPC), the MPCs are based on the system identification technique to build the linear or nonlinear empirical models of dynamics systems, and they can optimize the current time slot and anticipate future events, so some researchers use the MPC in the complex dynamic systems such as buildings (Oldewurtel et al, 2014;Sturzenegger et al, 2016) and hybrid electric vehicles (Lopez-Sanz et al, 2017).…”
