Nonequilibrium Collective Dynamics in Photoexcited Lipid Multilayers by Time Resolved Diffuse X-Ray Scattering

Abstract: We study the nonequilibrium shape fluctuations in fluorescence labeled phospholipid multibilayers composed of the model lipid DOPC and the well-known lipid dye Texas red, driven out of equilibrium by short laser pulses. The temporal evolution of the lipid bilayer undulations after excitation was recorded by time resolved x-ray diffraction. Already at moderate peak intensities (Pp≤10(5)  W/cm2), pulsed laser illumination leads to significant changes of the undulation modes in a well-defined lateral wavelength b… Show more

“…The links between the cellular behaviour and properties of phospholipid membranes are treated in a review by Tanaka 4 . Investigations of such systems have been carried out using a wide range of methods, such as light-scattering 3 , atomic force microscopy (AFM) 5 , X-ray scattering 612 as well as elastic 10, 13 and inelastic 7, 14, 15 neutron scattering. An overview of neutron scattering methods used to investigate phospholipid membranes was presented by Fragneto and Rheinstädter 16 , while Salditt focused on X-ray scattering 10 .…”

“…The third term is a harmonic approximation to the interactions between adjacent bilayers which has been shown to be reasonable [24]. Equation 1is a tilt-dependent extension of a discrete free energy functional previously utilized to describe x-ray scattering from membrane stacks [22,23,[25][26][27], originally from liquid crystal literature [28]. The height fluctuation spectrum was derived following standard methodology [14].…”

“…Compared to other biophysical techniques, neutron beams may offer distinct advantages when studying biological systems at the atomic level. Neutron scattering does not rely on bulky fluorophore or spin label probes, which can alter the physical properties of model membrane systems [ 10 , 12 ]. Instead, neutrons scatter off the nucleus of the atom, with the greatest scattering power coming from light elements commonly found in biological systems, such as carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen.…”
