Non-melanoma Skin Cancer – a Clinicopathological Study of Patients with Basal Cell Carcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Abstract: SummaryBackground: Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is the most common malignancy in Caucasians. It mainly includes two major keratinocyte tumors -basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The objective of the study was to analyze and compare the clinicopathological differences between patients with BCC and SCC of the skin. Material and Methods: A cohort of 541 patients with a total of 719 BCCs, and 126 patients with a total of 162 SCCs were retrospectively analyzed. Results: While there was… Show more

“…BCC and SCC are known as keratinocyte carcinoma (KC), historically termed non-melanoma skin cancers, which correspond to 95% of malignant skin tumors 3 , 5 . Although melanoma comprises only 1% of all skin cancers, it accounts for approximately 90% of deaths associated with cutaneous tumors 6 – 8 . BCC rarely results in death or metastatic disease, but can cause significant morbidity due to destructive local spread 9 .…”

“…In this study, patients over 50 years old represented 84.5% of the study population (mean 60, 6 years with the peak incidence in the sixth decade) in whom recurrence rate was significantly higher (p-value = 0.18), similarly some studies on NMSC detected a peak incidence in the sixth decade of life [10] [ [32]. Although Bartos and Kullova 2018 stated that BCC and SCC had several clinicopathological differences and should be considered separately [33], our study didn't show any significance regarding the distribution of both BCC and SCC in relation to different factors (Table 13).…”

“…Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC), which has become the second most common non‐melanoma skin cancer, is a kind of malignant tumors originating from epidermis or adnexal keratinocytes. With the increasing incidence in recent years, cSCC mainly occurs in the light‐exposed parts of the head, neck, hands and feet of the elderly over 50 years old and is easy to relapse and metastasis 1,2 and divided into: protuberant mass, deep infiltration, and ulcer type. Due to most of the typical cSCC show protruding masses on the surface of the skin, which can be found and treated earlier, there were few imaging reports regarding them 3 .…”
