Non-coronary abnormalities of the left heart: CT angiography findings

Abstract: Cardiac computed tomography (CT) is most commonly performed for the evaluation of the coronary arteries; however, non-coronary cardiac pathologies are frequently detected on these scans. In cases where magnetic resonance imaging cannot be used, cardiac CT can serve as the first-line imaging modality to evaluate many non-coronary cardiac pathologies. In this article, we discuss congenital non-coronary abnormalities of the left heart and their cardiac CT imaging features.

“…Coronary CTA has the added ability to depict extracardiac lesions of the chest and scanned upper abdomen. These incidental lesions can often present a challenge to physicians because of the potential benefits and risks of identifying such lesions [ 30 - 32 ].…”

“…Atrial or interatrial septal aneurysms (ASAs) are characterized as outpouchings (with a protrusion >11 mm to either side in adults) of the interatrial septum beyond the interatrial septal plane ( Figure 11 , Supplementary Video 3 ). 12 , 13 They are often congenital, and patients with ASAs are usually asymptomatic. Atrial septal aneurysms are divided into different subgroups according to their dynamic protrusion into the right and left atrium (LA) on echocardiography.…”

“… 12 They can be associated with patent foramen ovale (PFO), atrial septal defect, stroke, and thromboembolism. 13 Therefore, when ASAs are detected, accompanying findings should be carefully examined. Treatment is not recommended in patients with ASAs unless complications occur.…”

“…GAR may be helpful to diagnose and determine the severity of the CAD. Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) is a non-invasive test that offers substantially accurate results regarding the anatomy of coronary arteries and provides additional information about the presence, severity, and morphology of coronary plaques (10)(11)(12)(13)(14). Guidelines recommend CCTA as the first-line imaging tool to evaluate acute chest pain and stable angina pectoris in patients with mild to moderate risk (15).…”
