Non-coding RNAs in depression: Promising diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers

Abstract: Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), including microRNAs, circular RNAs, and long non-coding RNAs, are important regulators of normal biological processes and their abnormal expression may be involved in the pathogenesis of human diseases including depression. Multiple studies have demonstrated a significantly increased or reduced ncRNAs expression in depressed patients compared with healthy subjects and that antidepressant therapy can alter the aberrant expression of ncRNAs in depressed patients. Although the existing e… Show more

“…For example, miRNA mimics or inhibitors could be used to manipulate transcript expression alongside or in place of RNA interference (RNAi) methods. These new approaches could be useful for laboratory-based functional genomics, or even as new avenues for control [miRNAs have been suggested as therapeutic targets in various human diseases ( Marracino et al., 2021 ; Shi et al., 2021 ; Smit-McBride and Morse, 2021 )]. Furthermore, inhibiting EV release from helminths would conceivably prevent delivery of miRNAs (and other bioactive molecules) to host immune cells.…”

“…ZNRD2-DT is a lncRNA and interestingly our ndings include several IncRNAs in the set of pGenes as well as related with regulatory variations, either colocalizing with cis-eQTLS (RP11-894P9.2 and RP5-1115A15.1) or with mechanistic evidence for its association with gene expression regulation (ZNRD2-DT). Although not being clear their exact role in MD pathophysiology, ncRNAs have been described as promising biomarkers and drug targets for MD [59,60].…”
