Non-BPS States And Branes In String Theory

Abstract: We review the recent developments in our understanding of non-BPS states and branes in string theory. The topics include 1) construction of unstable non-BPS D-branes in type IIA and type IIB string theories, 2) construction of stable non-BPS D-branes on various orbifolds and orientifolds of type II string theories, 3) description of BPS and non-BPS D-branes as tachyonic soliton solutions on brane-antibrane pair of higher dimension, and 4) study of the spectrum of non-BPS states and branes on a system of coinci… Show more

“…Therefore we regard our results as another evidence of such an idea. Similar "Chan-Paton factor for closed string vertex" was discussed [7,1] in the case of a non-BPS D-brane 17 , where it was argued that the branch cut due to a RR-vertex provides an extra Chan-Paton factor if its one end is on the non-BPS D-brane. We also argue that some of the states in NSNS sector have the Chan-Paton factor σ 3 .…”

“…Recently there have been tremendous progresses in understanding non-BPS configrations of D-branes and tachyon condensations in them, pioneered by Sen (for a review see [1]). In Superstring theory most of these systems are realized as either brane-antibrane systems [2,3,4,5] or non-BPS D-branes [6,5,7,8,9,10,11,12,13].…”

“…Sen's construction [1] of BPS and non-BPS branes as solitons inside higher dimensional branes and the Gutperle/Strominger extension to the timelike case [2] showed the existence of a class of Space-like objects in string theory, as spacelike-extended analogs of ordinary (timelike-extended) branes, references include [3,4,5,6], [7]- [12]. Up to now however Sbranes have been rather mysterious as their role and properties have not been fully understood.…”
