Abstract: Prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) varies in India; up to one-third of the urban population is affected by the disease. In Asian Indians, presence of NAFLD is driven by multiple factorspresence of excess abdominal fat (abdominal subcutaneous and intra-abdominal fat) and lifestyle factors (imbalanced diets and physical inactivity), and it is correlated closely with insulin resistance, the metabolic syndrome and dysglycaemia in the background of genetic predisposition (investigated genes in … Show more

“…Although the relationship between obesity and NAFLD, insulin resistance, and T2DM in South Asians is increasingly being researched [22][23][24][25], that of pancreatic fat needs more data [26•, 27]. Finally, low skeletal muscle mass (sarcopenia) is now recognized to be more common in South Asians and was shown to be independently associated with T2DM [28].…”

“…Asians, and South Asians in particular, have more severe inflammation, insulin resistance, and liver fat even when non-obese by BMI standards used for Caucasians 9,12 . Excess liver fat may occur in non-obese south Asians as well, and has been shown to be almost double the amount recorded in Caucasians when matched for weight; and is associated strongly with insulin resistance 9,13 . Other adipose tissue depots such as the deep subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue, which could destabilise metabolism, are more in Asian Indians than white Caucasians 14 .…”
