Nodular vasculitis associated with lung adenocarcinoma

Abstract: Nodular vasculitis is an uncommon type of panniculitis. It was firstly associated to the infection by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and named erythema induratum of Bazin, however nowadays it has been associated with several other underlying disorders and it is better described as nodular vasculitis. Concerning its relationship with malignant conditions, there is only one reported case, in association with metastatic colon adenocarcinoma. We report a case of nodular vasculitis as the first manifestation of lung ad… Show more

“…Nodular vasculitis is a chronic relapsing lobular panniculitis with septal vasculitis. Its cause may be due to a hypersensitivity reaction to an antigenic stimulus [2]. Erythema induratum must be distinguished from erythema nodosum, nodular vasculitis, polyarteritis nodosa, tertiary syphilis, and other infectious and inflammatory panniculitides.…”

“…NV has been thought of as a delayed hypersensitivity response to an antigenic stimulus, originally associated with tuberculosis. However, some cases have been associated with both nontuberculous infections, such as hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, HIV, and streptococci, and noninfectious conditions [2], such as autoimmune diseases [3] and inflammatory bowel disease [1]. Chronic exposure to cold and drugs [4] have been reported.…”

“…A further category of non‐infectious cases of EI was introduced, termed NV, after other triggers were described 1,4 . Antigenic stimuli to EI/NV include colon and lung adenocarcinoma, 5 infections (chlamydia, nocardia, pseudomonas, fusarium, hepatitis B/C virus), autoimmune diseases (systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis) and drugs (etanercept and propylthiouracil) 4 …”

“…Some of the infectious causereported in previous studies for NV are Tuberculosis, Nocardia, Fusarium, Pseudomonas, Chlamydia, and hepatitis C virus (3)(4)(5). Some cases of NV have also been found associated with non-infectious conditions such as drugs (6,7), inflammatory bowel diseases (8), several autoimmune diseases (9), and rare malignant diseases (10,11). Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) are oral antidiabetic drugs that in-Nodular vasculitis (NV), first described by Montgomery in 1945 for erythema induratum-like lesions, is a rare form of panniculitis that is particularly localized on the calves.…”
