Black soldier fly have been shown to be one of the optimal alternatives to fishmeal, but there are few reports on the effects of zymolytic black soldier fly larvae (ZBSFL) on the growth and digestion of crustaceans. An 8-week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of different replacement levels of ZBFLS on growth performance, body composition, and digestive enzyme activity of the mud crab larvae. Four diets were formulated by replacing fishmeal with 0%, 5%, 10% and 15% ZBSFL in the basal diet. Crab larvae were randomly divided into four groups of three replicates each and fed twice daily. The results showed that the SR of crab larvae was higher than that of the no-substitution group when the substitution rate reached 5% (P < 0.05). There was no significant change in SR when the substitution rate was further increased. Weight growth rate and Specific growth rate were similar, both highest at 10% substitution ratio. The crude protein content of whole crab larvae gradually increased as the proportion of FM substituted by ZBSFL increased. The lipid content of whole crab larvae in the 5% substitution ratio group was significantly higher than that in all other groups (P < 0.05). Meanwhile. The activities of amylase, protease and lipase gradually increased. In this experiment, when the percentage of ZBSFL substitution for FM reached 10%, its growth performance was optimal, with higher SR, less negative effects and more balanced indicators in all aspects. When the substitution rate was further increased, it might increase the digestive burden of the crab and negatively affect its growth.

Phenotypic plasticity enables organisms to response to environmental variations by generating a range of phenotypes from a single genotype. In holometabolous insects, traits that influence larval plasticity may hold relevance for adult life history strategies. We present a comprehensive investigation into phenotypic plasticity in black soldier flies, a species known for its efficient waste-to-biomass conversion in the larval stage. Here, we document adult sex-specific plastic responses and reproductive strategies shaped by larval diets. We examined traits including adult body size, reproductive organ development, sperm length, mating behaviours, egg production and other life history parameters across different treatments. Our findings reveal notable sex-specific differences in phenotypic plasticity, with females showing increased plasticity in reproductive investment. Furthermore, males and females differed starkly in allometric growth and weight ratio of reproductive organs. Diets that facilitated longer male lifespans also prompted earlier male emergence suggesting an interplay between lifespan and degree of protandry. This maximizes the overlap of male and female lifespans, thereby enhancing mating success in diverse environmental conditions. Our results reveal plastic responses in mating behaviours, where diets producing smaller adults, smaller reproductive organs, and shorter sperm correlated with significantly enhanced mating effort and performance. This study highlights the complex interactions between nutrition, development, and reproductive strategies, and has significant implications for the insect bioconversion industries.

The reproductive biology of the black soldier fly (BSF), Hermetia illucens (L.) (Diptera: Stratiomyidae), was investigated in males and females with a focus on how sperm is handled by males before – and by females after – copulation. As this insect has great economic importance for protein production from agri‐food wastes, its reproduction needs to be precisely known. A detailed description of male and female reproductive organs was made, and sperm were counted in male and female storage organs. Measures of testis and sperm counts were performed in males of various ages and their dynamics was compared to the ovaries of females. Both male and female tracts were long, and consisted of various successive parts. In males, testes fill the vas deferens with mature sperm, that are tangled as ‘windrows’, and sperm pass successively through a ‘studded pipe’ and three phallic ‘wands’ before being transferred to females. In virgin males, mean (± SEM) sperm number increased from approximately 9700 (± 1400, n = 5) to 39600 (± 3470, n = 13) in 20 days, and testes gradually decreased in size, indicating continuous spermatogenesis. Sperm cells are long, more than 3 mm. During copulation, sperm are deposited by phallic ‘wands’ at the base of each spermatheca in a smooth tube followed by a ‘fishnet canal’ at the top of which they accumulate before complete storage. They then pass through a ringed canal, an elbow, and a rigid rod strewn with glands, before reaching the spermathecal reservoir. Females store approximately 680 spermatozoa after one mating in each spermathecal reservoir. Such complex sperm storage organs of females may indicate strong female post‐mating selection, and reflect competition for long and numerous sperm in this species, in which female multiple matings are suspected. Besides its economical interest, BSF is an appealing model for further investigations on sexual selection.
