Context.—Individuals who are immune deficient are at an increased risk for developing lymphoproliferative lesions and lymphomas. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is 1 of 4 clinical settings associated with immunodeficiency recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) in which there is an increased incidence of lymphoma and other lymphoproliferative disorders. Objectives.—To describe the major categories of benign lymphoid proliferations, including progressive HIV-related lymphadenopathy, benign lymphoepithelial cystic lesions, and multicentric Castleman disease, as well as the different types of HIV-related lymphomas as defined by the WHO. The characteristic morphologic, immunophenotypic, and genetic features of the different entities will be discussed in addition to some of the pathogenetic mechanisms. Data Sources.—The WHO classification of tumors of hematopoietic and lymphoid tissues (2001 and 2008), published literature from PubMed (National Library of Medicine), published textbooks, and primary material from the authors' current and previous institutions. Conclusions.—HIV infection represents one of the clinical settings recognized by the WHO in which immunodeficiency-related lymphoproliferative disorders may arise. Although most lymphomas that arise in patients with HIV infection are diffuse, aggressive B-cell lesions, other lesions, which are “benign” lymphoid proliferations, may also be associated with significant clinical consequences. These lymphoproliferations, like many other immunodeficiency-associated lymphoproliferative disorders, are often difficult to classify. Studies of HIV-associated lymphoid proliferations will continue to increase our understanding of both the immune system and lymphomagenesis.

SummaryIn order to investigate whether the clinical behaviour of extranodal natural killer/T‐cell lymphoma, nasal type (ENKTL) varies by race within a geographic region, we identified a total of 213 non‐Hispanic whites, Hispanics and Asians/Pacific islanders (APIs) diagnosed with ENKTL in the California Cancer Registry between 2001 and 2008. The incidence and outcomes of the disease in these racial groups were analysed. The incidence rates in non‐Hispanic whites, Hispanics and APIs were 0·05, 0·18 and 0·23 per 100 000 person‐years, respectively, among males; and 0·03, 0·07 and 0·10 per 100 000 person‐years, respectively, among females. The overall survival (OS) at 5 years was 28·6% in non‐Hispanic whites, 30·4% in Hispanic, and 24·0% in APIs. In multivariate analysis, distant versus local/regional disease (Hazard Ratio [HR] = 2·01, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1·36, 2·96), initial treatment with chemotherapy plus radiotherapy (HR = 0·39, 95% CI: 0·22, 0·70) or radiotherapy alone (HR = 0·48, 95% CI: 0·23, 0·99) versus no therapy were associated with OS. However, OS was not affected by age, sex, race, chemotherapy alone, socioeconomic status, or human immunodeficiency virus infection. In conclusion, ENKTL is more common and clinically more similar among Hispanics and APIs than non‐Hispanic whites with poor outcome in all racial groups.

Background: Primary extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is emerging as a common entity that presents with diverse clinical features, morphology and immunophenotyping patterns. Aim: The aim of this study is to analyze the clinicopathological and immunohistochemical features in patients with primary extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Settings and Design: This is a retrospective observational study from pre-recorded hospital data. Materials and Methods: The data of all histologically confirmed patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma were retrieved to identify those confirmed as primary extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma among patients attending King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia over the last 12 years (January 2003 - May 2015). Retrieved data was analyzed with regards to the demography, clinical features, histopathological and immunohistochemical features. Lymphoma of the study group were classified according to World Health Organization classification of lymphomas 2008. Result: A total of 218 patients with histologically confirmed non-Hodgkin's lymphoma were identified. Seventy-nine (36.2%) had primary extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The most common age group affected was 20-39 years for both genders. Gastrointestinal system was the most frequently involved system for both genders. Colon was the most common site involved among males, while thyroid and thymus were the most common sites involved among females. Diffuse large B cell lymphoma was the most common histological type. Conclusion: Primary extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is common in Saudi Arabia affecting males and females almost equally in the third and fourth decades of life, with diffuse large B cell lymphoma being the most common histologic subtype.
